What Greek values does Pericles represent?
Pericles was the ruler of Athens who was responsible for rebuilding Athens following the Persian Wars.  He was so important that the time period he lived in was known as the Age of Pericles.  He was a good speaker with a reputation for being very honest.  He supported the arts and was the developer of the Acropolis and many other building and shrines.

What other Greeks are associated with Pericles?
Aspasia-Pericles wife.  Socrates described her as one of the most intelligent and witty women of her time.
Thucydides-A champion wrestler who won the Olympics and tried to take leadership away from Pericles.
Aeschylus-Great tragic playwright that was sponsored by Pericles.
Ephialtes-Politician partner that helped form the Athenian government.

What places are associated with Pericles?
Parthenon-Pericles personally oversaw this project.  It cost almost 3 billion dollars in todays money to build.  It was made from 20 thousand tons of marble that was taken from Mount Pentelicus.

Long Walls-built between Athens and the Piraeus, a peninsula with three harbors about 4.5 miles from Athens.

Acropolis-Pericles had built a large statue of Athena Promachus, the Parthenon and the Propylaea.  There were also temples and shrines built to other gods.

What did Pericles accomplish?
Pericles was involved in politics with Ephialtes.  They started the Athenian government.  He led several important military expeditions and approved peace with Persia.  He approved payment of jury service so that the poor could take time off from their jobs to be involved in politics.

What Greek stories are does Pericles play a part in?
Pericles, Prince of Tyre by William Shakespeare- Pericles is looking to find a wife.  He travels to many different locations such as Antioch, Pentapolis and Tarsus.  In Tarsus he stops widespread famine and in Pentapolis he jousts to win the love of King Simonides' daughter, Thaisa. 
Archidamus and Pericles during the Greek Wars-Descibes the war in Greece and how these leaders succeeded.  Pericles was elected ruler of Athens for 29 years straight.

*Pericles was born in 493 BC to a rich aristocratic family.  His father was a famous general in the Persian wars.
*He made it a law that only people eligible to hold a public office must be born to two people of Athenian citizenship.  Children of foreign mothers would be excluded.
*He had an abnormally long head and was shown wearing a helmet in most pictures.
*He died from the plague in 429.
*He made a famous speech about those who had died in war called the Funeral Oration.
*Pericles was nicknamed the "Olympian" because of his authority in Athens.
